Sterling Hardware once anchored the south end of Main Street in Hazard, KY. Over the years Main Street emptied out and once vibrant storefronts became vacant. Despite the trend, a dedicated group of community members retained focus on reviving downtown Hazard as part of a larger strategy to revitalize downtowns throughout Appalachia. The former Sterling Hardware Building now hosts a mix of organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life in Hazard and the region.

AIF purchased 420 Main Street in 2016. The building immediately became the offices of the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky and four other nonprofit organizations focused on economic development, arts, and food security in the region. The conference room is regularly used by community organizations and hosts a weekly yoga class.

The further redevelopment of the property presents an opportunity to incubate micro-retail, co-worker space, and catalyze innovative downtown revitalization in Hazard.
